Translating Dante

What fresh hell is this?

Join us for an informal discussion of Mary Jo Bang’s contemporary translation of Dante’s Inferno (Cantos V through IX).

What does it mean to reference South Park, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Freud, Paradise Lost, and “Hotel California”?  Does Bang make a “timeless” poem timely?  Or does she go too far?

Literature professors David Pike, David Keplinger and Linda Voris will lead an informal discussion using Allen Mandelbaum’s classic translation for comparison.

Tuesday, March 17         2.30-4 p.m.

228 Battelle-Tompkins

PDFs of both versions of the translation are available here.
