K-Pop in a Global Context

Calling all fans of K-Pop!

In the last decades, K-pop has evolved into a global music genre, with groups and artists touring routinely around the world, performing in international music shows, dominating the popular music charts, and winning both national and international awards. This working group brings together AU students, faculty, staff, and all fans of South Korean music and pop culture to explore the impact and influence of K-pop in this expansive global setting. Although the term “K-pop” often refers to idol music groups, we will also explore other genres and independent artists, and find out more about the history of music genres and styles. In addition to informal conversations about our favorite artists, albums, music videos, and choreography, we will also invite scholars, dancers, journalists, and musicians from the DC area.

All fandoms welcome!  We look forward to music recommendations from group members!

Some ideas for our conversations:

  • the art of music videos
  • musical references, influences, and innovations
  • performance and style
  • fandom cultures
  • global media and platforms
  • and a visit from the fabulous K-District, American University’s K-Pop Dance Team
